Incorporating diffuse-interface nuclei in phase-field simulations

چکیده
We propose a computational framework for incorporating diffuse-interface critical nuclei in phase-field simulations. Using a structural transformation as an example, we first generate a table of diffuse-interface critical nuclei. We then incorporate them in phase-field simulations through the explicit nucleation algorithm. The temporal growth kinetics of the introduced nuclei is obtained by numerically solving the Allen–Cahn equation. The results are analyzed by comparing to the phase transformation kinetics using the classical nucleation and normal growth theory and the Kolmogorov–Johnson–Mehl–Avrami equation. 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Retrieving topological information from the phase-field description of geometric evolution
Phase field and diffuse interface are popular methods for the modeling and simulations of evolving interfaces. They do not track the interface explicitly, and are insensitive to topological events. In some areas of applications, detecting and controlling topological change may be important. In this talk, we discuss some recent works with current and former colleagues at Penn State (C. Liu, R. R...
متن کاملModelling and simulations of multi-component lipid membranes and open membranes via diffuse interface approaches.
Diffuse interface (phase field) models are developed for multi-component vesicle membranes with different lipid compositions and membranes with free boundary. These models are used to simulate the deformation of membranes under the elastic bending energy and the line tension energy with prescribed volume and surface area constraints. By comparing our numerical simulations with recent biological...
متن کاملQuantitative phase-field modeling for boiling phenomena.
A phase-field model is developed for quantitative simulation of bubble growth in the diffusion-controlled regime. The model accounts for phase change and surface tension effects at the liquid-vapor interface of pure substances with large property contrast. The derivation of the model follows a two-fluid approach, where the diffuse interface is assumed to have an internal microstructure, defined...
متن کاملQuantitative phase-field approach for simulating grain growth in anisotropic systems with arbitrary inclination and misorientation dependence.
A phase-field approach for quantitative simulations of grain growth in anisotropic systems is introduced, together with a new methodology to derive appropriate model parameters that reproduce given misorientation and inclination dependent grain boundary energy and mobility in the simulations. The proposed model formulation and parameter choice guarantee a constant diffuse interface width and co...
متن کاملA continuous surface tension force formulation for diffuse-interface models
We present a new surface tension force formulation for a diffuse-interface model, which is derived for incompressible, immiscible Navier–Stokes equations separated by free interfaces. The classical infinitely thin boundary of separation between the two immiscible fluids is replaced by a transition region of small but finite width, across which the composition of the one of two fluids changes co...
